Texas Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship

2016 Self-Care Championship Winner

About the Competition

The National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) in 2006 launched the Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship. The competition is now conducted in over 30 states and represents the participation of more than 150 colleges of pharmacy throughout the U.S.

In the summer of 2012 the TPA student executive council composed of student representatives from around the state had suggested the need for another annual competition. Some had recommended a medication therapy management challenge, but all had agreed that there was a need to expand student’s knowledge in self-care. In the coming months TPA and the executive council had found and choose to join the nation in competing in the NASPA-NMA: Self-Care Championship that currently takes place in 32 different states.

The event promotes interactive learning of self-care topics to the participants as well as the audience in attendance. The Texas Championship is conducted annually by TPA at our annual conference. The competition features teams from the state’s six colleges/schools of pharmacy and will include the new colleges as they are added. These teams compete head-to-head in an event similar to a quiz bowl and the Jeopardy game show. The questions are developed by the NMA which focus on self-care and OTC medications.

You may be wondering, what is Self-Care? The game questions are based on basic knowledge of over the counter products, and self-care patient treatment.  However, one of the most exciting aspects of the competition is that all in attendance can receive CE credit and cheer on their favorite school!

Pharmacists and other attendees in the audience have the opportunity to obtain CE from the event. Learning is enhanced by an explanation of the answers by a panel of experts and the audience is also encouraged to interact during the program.

Teams include four currently enrolled student pharmacists from each college of pharmacy selected by their peers to represent their school.
