2:45 PM - 4:15 PM            New Drug Update
Every year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves a number of new drugs for use.  In some cases, these new agents represent significant advancements over older, more established treatments.  In other instances, however, marketing practices by pharmaceutical companies result in widespread use of some new drugs over less costly, commonly used agents with similar risks and benefits to patients. This seminar will review some recently approved drugs with an emphasis on their pharmacology, clinical efficacy, adverse effects, drug interactions, and monitoring requirements.  Attendees will learn practical information about the new drugs presented, which in turn, they can use in their interactions with prescribers and in the care and counseling of their patients.

Presented by Bryson Duhon, Pharm.D. & Laurajo Ryan, PharmD, MSc, BCPS, CDE

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM            Pharmacy Immunization Compliance is More than a Revenue Generator

The purpose of this activity is to educate pharmacists to prepare to expand their pharmacy operations for immunization compliance.  Immunization compliance is more than having a standing order.  The pharmacy must ensure they have liability insurance that covers the dispensing of immunizations, policies and procedures, intake forms, OSHA requirements including Bloodborne Pathogen Plan.  There are many requirements that are needed for immunizations with very little mandates until an patient has a reaction to the vaccine, this is when the liability insurance company starts requesting Policies and Procedures and all the items mention above.
Presented by R. Jeffrey Hedges, CDME

4:30 PM – 6:00 PM           The Emerging Science of Health Behavior Change
As the most accessible health care professional, pharmacists increasingly are called on to assist patients in making health behavior changes.  Emerging information about effective and personalized approaches to achieving sustained behavior change spans the disciplines of cognitive and effective neuroscience, behavioral genetics, neuroeconomics, and behavioral economics; unfortunately, pharmacists generally have little exposure to this information.  This presentation will introduce pharmacists to what we currently know about successful behavior change.

7:30 AM - 9:00 AM           Patient Safety Act: Are You in Compliance and Protected?
The Patient Safety Act of 2005 is now in effect and requires all Health Care Providers to document all adverse events through a quality improvement program.  Pharmacies must understand these new requirements, the legal protection the law provides when reporting adverse events and the consequences of not implementing or not reporting adverse events.  When adverse events are reported to a Patient Safety Organization, all documentation is considered "Privileged" through the legal protection of the Act and the documentation cannot be obtained through a subpoena.
Presented by R. Jeffrey Hedges, CDME

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM            Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship
The National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) have partnered to launch the NASPA/NMA Student Pharmacist Self Care Championship. The event promotes active learning of self care topics to the participants as well as the audience.

Championships are conducted annually by each state pharmacy association at their annual or mid-year conferences, and usually feature teams from the state’s colleges, universities and schools of pharmacy. These teams compete head-to-head in an event similar to a quiz bowl, as they answer questions developed by the NMA, which are focused on self care.

Pharmacists and other attendees in the audience have the opportunity to obtain Continuing Education (CE) from attendance at the event.

3:30 PM - 5:00 PM            Stress Management Skills for Pharmacy Practice
This activity will introduce pharmacists to evidence-based approaches for managing stress.  Attendees will practice mind-body skills known to short-circuit the "fright, fight, or flight" response to stressful situations.  Attendees also will learn cognitive practices for changing their thinking about potentially stressful situations.  Attendees will leave with a personal toolkit of strategies for controlling the amount of stress they experience both in and out of the workplace.

9:15 AM - 10:15 AM         What's New in Lipid Lowering Therapy?

In 2013, both the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) released a guideline for the treatment of dyslipidemia. Recently, the ACC also released an expert consensus statement discussing the role of non-statin therapies. Untreated dyslipidemia increases the risk of cardiovascular disease by almost double. With over 70 million American adults currently having elevated low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, appropriate treatment of dyslipidemia is critical. The role of statin therapy is firmly established; however, the role of non-statin therapies are not as clear. Most recently, a new medication class, PCSK9 inhibitors, has been released onto the market. The place in therapy of these agents, and other non-statin medications, are questionable. Attendees of this session will be familiarized to the data regarding non-statin therapies and their potential roles in therapy will be discussed.
Presented by Kathleen Lusk, Pharm.D.

The presentation is interactive and requires active participation from audience members in order to take home actual sample clinical pharmacy protocols and billing documents.
