Texas Pharmacy Association President Mary Klein and TPA Member Sabrina Griggs participated this week in the Texas State Board of Pharmacy’s Task Force on the Operation of Rural Hospital Pharmacies. The task force approved a recommendations to go to the TSBP at its August 7 meeting. If TSBP members agree with the recommendation, it will be sent to the Texas Register in September for public comment.

Key points of the recommendation include:

  • For hospitals (any size) that have a full-time pharmacist, the standard is a retrospective review within 72 hours of any orders when the pharmacy is closed.
  • For hospitals with less than 10 beds and a part-time pharmacist, the rules will not change.
  • For hospitals with greater than 10 beds and a part-time pharmacist, a retrospective review of orders must be performed within 96 hours, and the pharmacist must visit once a week.
  • For rural hospitals not be required to perform a prospective review of orders, as it would hold rural hospitals to a higher standard than other hospitals.
