Immunization

Pharmacists are not just the medication experts. They are also the vaccine experts! Immunization is just one of the many services Texas pharmacists provide to their patients.

Well-Child Visit Templates: Tools to Meet HHS Requirements

A Task Force on Pharmacist Engagement in State-Based COVID Vaccination comprising APhA, NASPA, NCPA, and state pharmacy association executives developed three tools for use by pharmacists to satisfy the requirement under the HHS Amendments authorizing pharmacists to administer childhood and COVID-19 vaccines. The September 9, 2020, HHS Amendment states that "the licensed pharmacist must, if the patient is 18 years of age or younger, inform the patient and the adult caregiver accompanying the patient of the importance of a well-child visit with a pediatrician or other licensed primary-care provider and refer patients as appropriate."

Two tools are Word documents, so individuals may customize or add data.

Other Immunization Resources

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes a variety of immunization-related information for healthcare professionals, including pharmacists.

The TMF Immunization Project's main goal is to improve immunization rates for older adult patients in Texas. The project focuses in the reduction of preventable illness like flu, pneumonia and herpes zoster, among others. It works hand in hand helping pharmacies raise vaccination rates, as well as encouraging  education to highlight prevention. It provides free tools and assistance to improve immunization interventions for older adults and help reduce mortality rates.

The Immunization Action Coalition provides resources for healthcare professionals a part of a cooperative agreement from the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pharmacists Are the Vaccine Experts

March 10, 2020

Fear and misinformation on social media is causing a resurgence in what were once age-old diseases. When parents in our communities don't know which vaccines to get, or even if they're safe, pharmacists fill a void that social media misinformation never can—because our patients are our neighbors.

We are a strong force, spread throughout Texas and the nation, ready to help administer vaccines, dispense medications, answer questions, and encourage people on their health care journey.

Now, more than ever, our voice can make a difference. Have those life-saving discussions about vaccination with your patients.

Debunking Vaccination Myth that 'Natural Is Better'

September 2, 2020

When it comes to building our children's immunity against diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella, some parents think that allowing their children to actually catch a serious disease and get sick builds a stronger immunity against the disease than having them vaccinated. The dangers of this misaligned approach can lead to serious or even fatal consequences. Not only is vaccinating your children safer, it has far greater benefits.

As a follow-up to the recent action by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy issued guidance clarifying that pharmacists and pharmacist-interns acting under the supervision of a pharmacist are allowed to order and administer immunizations to children 3-18 years of age as authorized by the third amendment to the PREP Act under certain conditions.

The Texas Pharmacy Association encourages parents to contact their local pharmacist and get up to speed on their family's vaccination schedule to ensure that our children remain free of vaccine-preventable diseases.
