TPA CEO Debbie Garza, R.Ph., coordinated a meeting this week with the Texas Medical Association, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and the Texas Pediatrics Society as well as other Texas pharmacy organizations to discuss legislative priorities and areas of interest.
The preliminary discussion focused on the opioid epidemic and how the pharmacy community is committed to partnering with stakeholders to work on viable solutions to prevent prescription opioid diversion and abuse; collaborative practice to leverage the value of pharmacists’ services with pharmacists part of the care team to more effectively manage chronic disease and improve patient outcomes; and enhanced patient care services for the role community pharmacists can play to improve health at the patient and population levels, like the ability to furnish medication for flu or strep if there is a positive result from a CLIA-waived point-of-care test.
TPA looks forward to continued discussions with the physician groups as we continue to hone our legislative agenda.
