Texas Pharmacy Association staff heard from medical experts December 11 during the UT-Austin Dell Medical School’s Maximizing Value-Based Care in Texas seminar at the Texas Capitol Auditorium. CEO Debbie Garza, Division Director of Public Affairs Stephanie Chiarello, and Student Pharmacist Intern Jane Jeon had the opportunity to learn from representatives of the Dell Medical School and the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).
One panel asked the question, “what is value and what does it mean?” and challenged the audience to think about how most drivers of health are not medical. Speakers noted that public health matters—such as having clean water, housing, and food—affect a patient’s ability to stay healthy. Pharmacists can play a valuable role as health care providers to improve value because of their repeated touchpoints with patients and the lower-cost alternatives they can provide. HHSC Deputy Associate Commissioner Andy Vasquez called out that providers have to work together “like physicians working with pharmacists” to improve patient outcomes.
Panelists discuss the growing importance of value-based care at a seminar on Tuesday.
