On Monday, State Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-21) filed SB 1056, "relating to the authority of physicians to delegate to certain pharmacists the implementation and modification of a patient's drug therapy." TPA has advocated for this bill to clarify that physicians may delegate to any properly qualified and trained pharmacist in any practice setting. In 2009, the Texas Legislature unintentionally passed confusing and conflicting statutory language about which pharmacists may be delegated activities by a physician. The current statute only allows pharmacists practicing in a hospital, hospital-based clinic, or academic healthcare institution to participate in collaborative practice with a physician to manage drug therapy.
The Texas Pharmacy Association is busy advocating on behalf of pharmacy during the 86th legislative session. A number of bills that would advance the pharmacy profession have already been filed, and more are expected soon.
