Texas CapitolThis week at the Texas Capitol, legislative committees began holding hearings on bills affecting pharmacy. The Senate Health and Human Services Committee heard SB 420, which would require pharmacists to check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) only on initial fills of medication rather than on each refill. It was left pending in committee, and TPA registered its support for the bill.

The House Public Health Committee heard HB 460, which would permit physician dispensing of dangerous drugs. TPA member and AIP President-elect Carter High testified against the legislation, and TPA registered its opposition to the bill. The legislation is troublesome because it compromises patient health and safety. Pharmacists are the medication experts, providing an important check on prescription accuracy and evaluating critical medication interactions.
