The Texas House Subcommittee on Health Professions heard testimony April 4 regarding House Bill 3458by Rep. Harold Dutton, which would expand access to immunizations for school-aged children by allowing pharmacists to administer all CDC-recommended vaccines—including tetanus, diptheria and pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal, and human papillomavirus (HPV)—under a physician’s protocol but without a prescription to anyone 7 years of age and older.
Speaking on behalf of NACDS and Walgreens, TPA Past President Carole Hardin-Oliver emphasized pharmacists' extensive immunization training and told committee members how such expanded immunization ability would be highly beneficial during crises, citing her own experience caring for patients during the 2009 H1N1 epidemic and when Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area in 2017.
