Members of the Texas Pharmacy Association and TPA affiliate Alliance of Independent Pharmacists of Texas, as well as the Texas Pharmacy Business Council, flew to Washington, D.C. this week to participate in the annual National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Congressional Pharmacy Fly-In.

The Texas delegation of independent and student pharmacists met with a number of Congressional leaders including the staff of Texas Senator John Cornyn to share concerns about how pharmacy challenges affect patients and small business.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar addressed attendees and acknowledged that pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers. He said high drug costs are a top concern for the Trump administration, noting problems with the DIR system and a plan to replace rebates with upfront discounts for patients to lower their drug costs.

“A changing prescription drug market has meant that high prescription drug costs are still a top concern for seniors and Americans of all ages," Azar said. "The experience at the pharmacy counter shapes what many Americans think about the health care system.”

Azar envisions pharmacists playing a broader role in healthcare, adding, “We're supportive of states examining their restrictions on scope of practice, and thinking hard about how to ensure Americans have the best access they can to the healthcare they need. There's no better place to start than by asking more of the most accessible healthcare professionals in America: our community pharmacists." Read Secretary Azar’s complete remarks here.
