Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA) President Raj Chhadua, Pharm.D., has issued the following statement following the mass shootings on August 3 and 4, 2019:

While hundreds of Texas Pharmacy Association members were “Elevating the Profession” at our annual conference this past weekend in Irving, our pharmacy colleagues in West Texas were confronting the sad reality that a mass shooting occurred too close to home in El Paso. More than 20 innocent people died inside a Walmart store where dedicated pharmacy professionals were serving their patients, as they do every day. The TPA House of Delegates observed a moment of silence Saturday afternoon in honor of those who were killed and injured.

TPA joins the American Pharmacists Association in condemning such acts of violence in Texas, in Ohio, and wherever they occur. Pharmacy personnel are integral members of their communities and are on the front lines of health care. We take this role seriously and train ourselves to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders that may contribute to such violence.

We are humbled by the many patients who rely on us to be their medication experts and who trust our counsel. Our profession is dedicated to helping others, and we offer our support and condolences to the communities we serve. We especially remember the many pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students who live and work in the El Paso area. We stand with them during this difficult time. TPA strongly believes that all pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be safe in their work and learning environments, and we encourage those affected by firearm or violence-related incidents to seek the help of counselors and other trained mental health professionals.

Let’s work together to keep our communities safe and healthy.
