The Texas Pharmacy Association's three standing councils met Wednesday, September 11 as part of TPA's 2019 Leadership Retreat. More than 50 members from across the state (and as far away as El Paso!) gathered to make their voices heard and contribute to their Association's continued vitality.

The Public Policy Council, chaired by Vice President Michael Muñiz, discussed both business and professional issues affecting pharmacy. Council members provided valuable feedback regarding which issues were top priorities as TPA looks ahead to the 2021 Texas legislative session. On the regulatory front, the council engaged in a lively discussion about the Texas State Board of Pharmacy's upcoming proposed rules to optimize pharmacy technicians, including allowing technicians to take new prescriptions, clarify prescriptions, and transfer prescriptions; eliminate technician ratios; and look at technicians' ability to administer immunizations. TPA's own Board will consider the council's comments when determining its policy on such matters.

President-Elect Michelle Beall chaired the Association Affairs Council meeting, which discussed TPA's annual awards, educational topics that would be useful to members, opportunities for membership growth and engagement, and ways to more effectively communicate with members.

The Financial Affairs Council wrapped up the day by reviewing the successful and profitable 2019 TPA Conference and Expo, examining membership dues and non-dues revenue opportunities, and discussing TPA's endorsed vendors. Council Chair and TPA Treasurer Adam Chesler also announced that the Association recently paid off its line of credit, has strong cash flow, and is building its financial reserves.
