Texas Pharmacy Association members from a variety of backgrounds and practice settings participated in a panel discussion Monday to discuss today's job market for pharmacists. The Fort Worth-area event was part of a joint career fair for P3 and P4 pharmacy students of the Texas Tech University Hodge School of Pharmacy and the University of North Texas System College of Pharmacy. TPA Member Emanuel George moderated the discussion among TPA Member Scott Lason, TPA President Raj Chhadua, TPA CEO Debbie Garza, and former TPA Board Member Ron Jencopale. Topics included the job outlook both in Texas and nationally  (and what can be done to improve it), trends in job expectations and salaries for new pharmacists, what employers are looking for in new graduates, and what students can do to help themselves land a position upon graduation.

“We told the students that they must remain involved in TPA as they enter the workforce, not only for networking but most importantly to help drive the change they wish to see in their profession,” Garza said. “Expanding pharmacist services and transitioning from a product-based dispensing role to an outcomes-based service role will increase the demand for pharmacists and provide the jobs that new graduates are looking for."
