Two Texas Pharmacy Association members were able to share their perspectives during Tuesday’s inaugural meeting of the Prescription Monitoring Program Advisory Committee. The committee, established last year by House Bill 3284, is designed to make recommendations to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy regarding operational improvements to the program.
TPA Member Doug Read (representing chain pharmacists/pharmacies) and President Raj Chhadua (representing independent pharmacists/pharmacies) participated as the committee engaged in discussion about the mandatory check of the PMP starting in March and the importance of integration with pharmacy software systems. The group also discussed ensuring that providers and pharmacies are protected on the intent of the program/platform, as well as the current budget and future funding. The dialogue was beneficial as both pharmacy and prescribers’ concerns were shared.
The committee will reconvene in April to compare pre- and post-mandate statistics to see if utilization of the PMP has truly increased.
