Texas Pharmacy Association members recognize the importance of involvement in professional organizations, but it is important to share that message with the next generation of pharmacists. On February 14, TPA CEO Debbie Garza participated in a panel discussion in Bryson Duhon’s Foundations of Professional Development course for P2 students at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Garza spoke alongside Diane Ginsburg, professor and associate dean and former president of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and Kristy Butler, a member of the ASHP Board of Directors.
The panel focused on leadership in professional organizations and the role of such organizations in advancing the profession of pharmacy. Garza addressed her mission to strengthen Texas Pharmacy as the executive leader of TPA and discussed her prior roles as chair of the Policy Council for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) and as a member of the NACDS Foundation Board. She also described her instrumental role in bringing 13 national pharmacy groups together for federal provider status legislation during her time in Washington, DC, as an example of how professional leaders can facilitate meaningful change.
