Office of the Governor of TexasThe Texas Pharmacy Association sent a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott this week expressing pharmacy's willingness and ability to help curb the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and play an integral role in any containment campaign. TPA highlighted how Texas pharmacists are already hard at work on the front lines, experiencing increased prescription volume, compounding hand sanitizer for clinicians and first responders, handling large call volumes, and more.

Most importantly, TPA offered recommendations for immediate actions to ensure uninterrupted access to medications and pharmacy care patients need as well as enhance business continuity for pharmacies during this pandemic by removing needless barriers and restrictions. TPA recommended the Governor invoke executive authority to allow pharmacists to dispense a 30-day supply of medication without the authorization of the prescribing practitioner, remove/waive proof of prescription delivery signature requirements and allow early refills of prescriptions without penalty from insurers or pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), allow all existing prior authorizations to continue, and let pharmacists initiate treatment for flu or strep with a positive CLIA-waived test, among other items.
