2018 TPA Conference & Expo Speaker - Charles Schwertner

Senator Charles Schwertner, R.Ph., M.D.

In 2010, Senator Charles Schwertner was elected to the Texas House of Representatives where he served on the powerful Appropriations Committee and helped author and pass a balanced state budget without raising taxes.  He also co-authored the state's voter ID law, landmark private property owner protections, and stronger border security measures.

In 2012, he was elected to the Texas Senate, District 5, winning the Republican Primary with nearly 75% of the vote.  During his first term, Senator Schwertner fought to restore funding for public education and helped pass HB 4, which will fully implement the state's 50-year water plan.  He also used his background as a physician to fight the expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare and was named "Senate Freshman of the Year" by Texas Monthly Magazine.

Senator Schwertner is Chairman of the powerful Health & Human Services Committee. He is the lone pharmacist in the Texas Legislature.

Senator Schwertner comes from six generations of farming and ranching in Texas.  In addition to his role in the Texas Legislature, Senator Schwertner is a practicing orthopedic surgeon, treating thousands of patients in Senate District 5 each year.  He and his wife, Belinda, reside in Georgetown with their three sons, Carson, Zachary, and Matthew.
