Statement
"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I am running for President-Elect because I am excited about the profession of pharmacy. We are on the cusp of evolving the profession of pharmacy, and TPA is leading the drive. Being President-Elect means using my experience, energy, and enthusiasm to move us forward—working for you, the members, so that our profession is all that it can and should be.
Since graduating from Texas Tech in 2005, I’ve been with Brookshire Grocery Company in multiple roles. The first 13 years were spent as a pharmacy manager, and I’m now a clinical pharmacist. My objective is to incorporate pharmacist-provided services in the community setting. I identify and develop new services, educate and train local pharmacy staff, and support local stores through our Pharmacy Innovation Learning Lab.
I have been a member of TPA since 2008, becoming actively involved in 2012. Since then I have served on various committees and councils, been a Trustee for the Foundation, and been a delegate for my local association. I am currently serving as the president of the Greater East Texas Pharmacy Association and on the Board of Directors for TPA. I also annually attend the APhA meeting where I serve as a Texas delegate. I received the TPA Excellence in Patient Outcomes award in 2014; it sits proudly in my office beside a picture of my wonderful, supportive family.
Notice that my membership and participation began several years after graduating from pharmacy school. That's not a typo. Like many pharmacy professionals in Texas, I didn’t even know TPA existed, much less the fulfillment it could bring to both my professional and personal lives. I was dissatisfied with where our profession stood. It wasn't what I had imagined it would be. I asked a mentor what I could do to help, and that led me to TPA. A few years later I attended my first meeting. What a life-changing experience! I couldn’t tell you which CE session I attended, but I can tell you that the people I met were simply amazing! I found my pharmacy family! The relationships I’ve developed through TPA are what drive my passion for the Association. I've found friends, mentors, and like-minded colleagues. We have so much in common regardless of our chosen practice setting. We're better pharmacists because of each other. And it's all because of TPA.
Not everyone is able to commit the time and energy to an elected position, and that’s okay. I see participation as a continuum. It can ebb and flow throughout your career, but it all starts with membership. Numbers matter in the size of an association and its financial sustainability. We need members at every level of participation to be an effective association. Every one of our actions drives our association toward success. A pharmacist told me she sent her first email to a representative this legislative session. Student members of TPA call non-renewals to remind them about the importance of their membership. It thrills me that I was able to help each of these members take that first step.
Our association is adapting to the needs of our profession. New ideas keep us progressive, and we learn so much from our history. Both are vital for our Association to continue as THE leader in Texas and nationally. I will use my experience, energy, and enthusiasm to move us forward. I ask for your support and vote as President-Elect.
