Description: Every year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves a number of new drugs for use.  In some cases, these new agents represent significant advancements over older, more established treatments.  In other instances, however, marketing practices by pharmaceutical companies result in widespread use of some new drugs over less costly, commonly used agents with similar risks and benefits to patients. This seminar will review some recently approved drugs with an emphasis on their pharmacology, clinical efficacy, adverse effects, drug interactions, and monitoring requirements.  Attendees will learn practical information about the new drugs presented, which in turn, they can use in their interactions with prescribers and in the care and counseling of their patients.

 

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:

1. Discuss the basic pharmacology of the new drugs presented and how the pharmacologic actions relate to both therapeutic and adverse effects.

2. Discuss clinically significant adverse effects and drug interactions, and the appropriate dosing and monitoring of the new drugs presented.

Description: The National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) have partnered to launch the NASPA/NMA Student Pharmacist Self Care Championship. The event, which is endowed by P&G, promotes active learning of self care topics to the participants as well as the audience.

 

Championships are conducted annually by each state pharmacy association at their annual or mid-year conferences, and usually feature teams from the state’s colleges, universities and schools of pharmacy. These teams compete head-to-head in an event similar to a quiz bowl, as they answer questions developed by the NMA, which are focused on self care.

 

Pharmacists and other attendees in the audience have the opportunity to obtain Continuing Education (CE) from attendance at the event.

 

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:

1. Identify and explain aspects of the effective and safe practice of pharmacy self-care treatments.

2. Describe at least two over the counter and prescription medication interactions that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be aware of.

3. List three OTC medications and their use. Pharmacists should identify counseling points for each of three OTC medications.

Antidepressant use in Anxiety, Depression and Bipolar - Helpful or Harmful?
