Texas Pharmacy Association CEO Debbie Garza attended the fall meeting of the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA), held in conjunction with the National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA) annual meeting in Boston last weekend. At the NASPA meeting, state pharmacy executives discussed collaborative practice and pharmacists’ authority in other states, heard first hand from the FDA on the Drug Supply Chain Security Act and the drug supply chain security requirements pharmacies must follow to protect patients from receiving harmful drugs, received an update on the pharmacy campaign that “pharmacists help people live healthier, better lives” by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), medication safety regarding counterfeits and new pharmacy quality metrics coming in 2019 tied to opioid use. Additionally, the NCPA government affairs team provided a legislative and regulatory update and their state legislative priorities for 2019, including Medicaid reform, practice advancement and payment for services, and PBM regulation.

Highlights of the NCPA meeting included keynote session speaker John Quiñones, a veteran ABC News reporter and host of "What Would You Do?", who shared his life story, conveyed the life-changing boost his education gave him, and provided thought-provoking insights into human nature and ethical behavior. Jim Huling, author of The 4 Disciplines of Execution, talked about setting clear goals and executing them properly in your pharmacy by focusing on the important, acting on lead measures, keeping a scorecard, and creating a cadence of accountability for your team. Thanks to the TPA members who attended and those who served as delegates for the NCPA House of Delegates meeting.
