Eden Males, LCSW, director of the Professional Recovery Network (PRN), spoke to students at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy October 16. Males discussed the signs and symptoms of addiction and mental health issues, the accountability and support PRN has to offer for those struggling, and the advocacy PRN can offer with licensing board and other regulatory agencies.
“I was very impressed by how engaged the students were in learning about addiction and mental health issues,” Males said. “The students were extremely supportive and moved by a personal story that was shared by a PRN pharmacist who is now in recovery from addiction.”
PRN is a nationally recognized peer assistance program dedicated to helping health care professionals enter a safe, healthy recovery from substance use or mental illness.
“Such presentations are important because they give us the opportunity to help break the stigmas of addiction and mental health issues, and to plant the seeds early in a pharmacist’s career for them to know they are not alone and PRN will always be here to advocate and support them if they are ever in need.”
