Student Pharmacists Advocacy and Relations Program (SPARx)

What Is SPARx?

SPARx is a four-part program developed by the Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA) that is designed to
educate and engage students in advocating and building positive relationships with:

  1. The Community
  2. Inter-Professional Colleagues
  3. Legislative Officials
  4. Regulatory Officials

Why Advocacy?

Advocacy is key to ensuring that the profession of pharmacy thrives. While visiting with state representatives is an important component of advocacy, there is much more to it. SPARx teaches students how to advocate in each of the four areas listed above.

Why Relations?

Everything we do is about the relationships we build with others. Whether it be public relations, government relations, collaborating with other health care professionals or networking at a conference, these relationships directly impact our profession and our practice.

How to Participate

Students may obtain more information from their pharmacy school's TPA Student Directors.

How It Works

Each of the four parts of the program has three requirements:

  1. Attendance at a workshop led by student leaders. A short message will also be provided by pharmacy leaders who have advocacy experience.
  2. A mini-project which will help students apply what they have learned.
  3. A short reflection over that part of the program.

Certificate and Awards

Students who complete all four areas of the advocacy program will be eligible to receive the TPA SPARx Certificate which will be a testament of their dedication to the profession of pharmacy. In addition, as students complete each individual part of the SPARx Program, they will help their school earn major points toward the TPA-ASP Cup!
